Go Dad Run!
At Activate Sport we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be active and healthy. We know some people require more incentive than others and this blog is all about getting you Daddies out there fitter and healthier! We are delighted to let you know about the new male version of the Race for Life called Go Dad Run.
The former Olympian and three-time world champion athlete Colin Jackson has recently launched Go Dad Run. Go Dad Run is something that Colin created himself and is a series of 5K runs for men and boys aged 14 and over that will take place in Cardiff, London and Birmingham on Father’s Day weekend June 14th and 15th to raise awareness of and funds for Prostate Cancer UK.
The inaugural Cardiff run is on Saturday, June 14th, in Bute Park and will be started by Colin and fellow Olympian Jamie Baulch. Colin will also be on hand to start the 5K in Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park on Sunday June 15th, Father’s Day, and Mark Foster will set the runners off in Crystal Palace Park, London on the same day.
All three events start at 10.30am so that the men and boys who sign up, get sponsored and take part can run, walk or jog around the courses and still be home in time for lunch!
There are, as ever, some key facts but they do make quite sober reading. In the UK one man dies every hour from prostate cancer and about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. That figure increases to 1 in 4 for men of black Caribbean or black African descent.
Colin decided to create something positive that would help raise funds and awareness when two of his own uncles developed prostate cancer and only one survived.
He chose Father’s Day weekend so that the event had a natural male focus but Go Dad Runs are open to fathers, sons, brothers, partners, friends, neighbours, work colleagues and teammates to take part in and, of course, mums, wives, girlfriends and sisters all have a big role to play in getting the men in their lives to sign up and then supporting them on the day.
All adult participants will be sent a pair of bright yellow Y-fronts to enable them to help generate social media awareness in the build up and to then proudly wear over their shorts on the day and we have Facebook and Twitter pages so the public can see who is showing their support.
Entry fees are £10 for 14-17 year olds and £15 for men aged 18 with sponsorship going to our partner charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
Supporters who have already posed with their pants include Gladstone Small, Colin, Mark, Jade Johnson, Prince’s manager Kiran Sharma, Mitch Winehouse and Mica Paris.
And despite the fact that the Y fronts are designed to be worn by the men OVER their running shorts, the swimmers never seem to need any encouragement to pose just in them!
